TOWER OF THE RUNE LORD 1: UNDERHALLS OF THE RUNE TOWER
Hook: Many tales and rumours are told of the Rune Lord, Idrŵs, a tall, giant gnome-like being who lives in a large fortified tower in The Wilderness. He is a force of good and renowned for his craftsmanship, especially cutting gems and jewels, which he loves more than anything. The wizard has tasked you with finding Idrŵs. He needs a precisely cut and rune-carved gem for a wand he is preparing for his own use... Unable to go himself, he gave you the gem and sent you into The Wilderness to find the Rune Lord. However, before reaching his tower, you were accosted and overwhelmed by trölls in the middle of the night, taken captive, and marched blindfolded to a cell in a fortification you could not identity... Now, blindfolds removed, the scent of metal and the acrid stench of chemicals filling your nostrils, you find yourselves in a quiet, cold chamber, cut stones under your feet, a large, heavy wooden door slammed and locked, trapping you in darkness. Despite the heavy smell of minerals and chemicals in the air, you are glad to be rid of the noxious odour of tröll hide...
Details: The Rune Tower of Idrŵs has been taken over by a Tŵrsani wraith (Tŵrsani are a proto culture for a few later tribes and peoples, including the Lumenorians), Mámaril the Cruel. Wraiths are the ghostly, shadowy spirit of evil, hateful human beings who died violently as a result of their own errors entertaining dark and evil powers. The creature crawled up from the depths of the earth through the pits in the gemstone garden below the Rune Lord's tower... It immediately bound Idrŵs to its will and took over his mind and body and summoned to himself trölls and other monstrous servants of evil and chaos. The creatures rove at night, marauding and causing mayhem where they will, gathering resources and food. The wraith has been using Idrŵs's mind and body to make items of power to help him in his efforts. He has made a handful of medallions for his tröll servants, his strongest, so they may travel during the day without turning to stone. Mámaril desires to remake the world in his image, and rule through cruelty and darkness. Fortunately, it is early in his attempts to do so, so his power is small and relegated to the Rune Tower. Characters have been thrown into the armour storage room after it was looted to outfit Mámaril's forces
